Photoaging - the main cause of skin aging

It is known that skin aging is only 30% caused by internal processes occurring in the body. The remaining 70% is due to external factors, of which the main share is photoaging. So what is photoaging?

Photoaging - aging of the skin under the influence of ultraviolet rays. Main signs: fine mesh wrinkles, pigment spots, solar lentigo, couperose.

There is a fairly wide range of professional procedures, device-based treatments and home cosmetics for correcting signs of skin photoaging. The most effective and fastest method is skin photorejuvenation.

BBL Photorejuvenation™

The BBL system emits powerful light energy of a specific range. Depending on the dominant problem, the doctor selects the necessary range and power of the procedure. The emitted energy is absorbed by specific targets: in the case of pigmentation the target is melanin, in couperose (dilated vessels) the target is hemoglobin, and for wrinkles the action is directed at collagen and elastin.

Advantages of BBL

There are many broadband light (IPL) systems on the market, differing in effectiveness and safety for the patient. A detailed comparison of BBL and IPL systems shows the significant advantages of Sciton technology. Broadband light systems at first glance are technically simpler than laser systems, but as our practical experience shows, there are not so many powerful and effective systems.

Recovery stages after BBL photorejuvenation - day-by-day progress photo in Kyiv

Dynamics of the recovery period after one photorejuvenation procedure treating pigmentation. Day 0 - solar lentigo before the procedure; Day 3 after the procedure - pigment spots darkened under the effect of BBL; on Day 10 after the procedure the darkened pigment spots lightened. Subsequent procedures will lighten the faint pigment spots and those not treated in previous sessions.

The Sciton BBL system - a world leader

Venus Clinic is equipped with the most powerful photorejuvenation system in the world - Sciton BBL by the American company Sciton (Palo Alto, California). This system surpasses many laser systems in effectiveness and safety.

Results of a 10-year study

Patients who regularly underwent Forever Young BBL procedures over 10 years looked 9 years younger than their peers. This confirms the long-term effectiveness of the BBL system.

Vessel removal with BBL

BBL photorejuvenation is one of the most effective methods for treating vascular problems on the face and body. The broadband light pulse is selectively absorbed by hemoglobin in dilated vessels, leading to their coagulation without damaging the surrounding tissues.

Which vascular problems does BBL address

  • Couperose (telangiectasia) - a fine vascular mesh
  • Rosacea - vascular patches at later stages
  • Red spots after acne
  • Cherry angiomas - red dots on the body

When to choose BBL, and when a laser?

BBL is optimal if:

  • Couperose covers a large area (both cheeks, nose)
  • Diffuse redness without clear borders
  • You need to address vessels + pigmentation + skin texture at once
  • There are signs of rosacea

Laser removal is better for:

  • Single large vessels (>1 mm)
  • Spider veins on the wings of the nose
  • Targeted work with individual vessels

For removing single vessels and spider veins, a spot laser is more effective - learn more about MedArt laser vessel removal.

More on BBL correction and related methods - in the photorejuvenation section.

At the consultation, a dermatologist will perform diagnostics and recommend the optimal method for your specific case.

Preparation for the procedure

Photorejuvenation does not require special preparation. The main requirement is the absence of fresh tan and of taking photosensitizers. We also recommend determining your skin phototype for individual selection of procedure parameters.

What to expect from the photorejuvenation procedure?

Thanks to regular courses of Forever Young BBL procedures, you can slow age-related aging and look much younger than your peers! Forever Young BBL differs from BBL photorejuvenation with a more pronounced ANTI-AGING EFFECT.

With regular procedures, the processes of age-related skin aging slow down - this is confirmed by 10-year clinical studies. More on the anti-aging effect - in the Forever Young BBL section.

Photorejuvenation is a procedure for patients who want to care for their skin preventively, slowing aging without a negative effect on the body, and who would prefer not to resort to surgical interventions in the future - for those who are wary of invasive procedures and at the same time strive to look flawless.

Before and after photos

Post-procedure recommendations

After the photorejuvenation procedure, no special care is required. Photorejuvenation is a lunch-break procedure that takes 5-10 minutes, after which you can apply makeup and return to your daily activities.

Sun protection after BBL

The most important recommendation is the mandatory use of the Melicor SPF 50 moisturizing sunscreen for sensitive skin for a month after the procedure. The correct choice of SPF cream depends on:

  • Your skin phototype
  • The season and intensity of the sun
  • The type of procedure you underwent

The doctor will go over individual recommendations with you during the consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Is it harmful?

Photorejuvenation is harmless for the skin and the body as a whole. For this purpose BBL uses the visible range of radiation, that is, the light that surrounds us and that we see every day. This is blue light, green light, yellow, orange and red light of high intensity. This range does not harm our skin but, on the contrary, stimulates metabolic processes in skin cells, improves microcirculation and nourishment of skin cells, and enhances local immunity and the protective functions of the skin.

DNA "repair"

It is also known that the procedure, besides removing signs of photoaging (pigment spots and vessels), is able to "repair" DNA damage that forms under the influence of free radicals and ultraviolet radiation in our skin and accumulates with age.

Guaranteed results

Unlike other systems, BBL achieves results at lower power settings with a lower risk of complications and side effects. Therefore, if you have the procedure on Sciton BBL, you get a clinical result with a lower risk of complications. BBL is the only system on the market with a clinically proven anti-aging effect (2012, Stanford University, California, USA. Authors: Anne Lynn S Chang, Patrick H Bitter, Jr, Kun Qu, Meihong Lin, Nicole A Rapicavoli, Howard Y Chang). These studies were published in such authoritative medical journals as the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, US National Institutes of Health, National Center for Biotechnology Information.

How soon will the result be noticeable?

After a quality procedure you will feel that changes for the better have occurred in the skin. This is noticeable quite quickly - already 2 weeks after the procedure.

How long does the recovery period last?

This is individual and depends on the problem you wish to solve. Photorejuvenation is a minimally invasive procedure without damage to skin integrity. The rehabilitation period can last from 30-60 minutes as redness after the procedure to 1-3 days as slight swelling in the case of removing a diffuse vascular mesh (couperose). In typical cases the recovery period passes quite smoothly and does not require special care. After the procedure it is recommended to use a sunscreen with SPF 30 and above. For example, the Weightless Protection Broad Spectrum SPF 45 sunscreen by PCA Skin, USA.

How often can the procedures be done?

The procedures can be done without restrictions. Photorejuvenation is an absolutely safe procedure that does not deplete the skin's reserves but, on the contrary, makes skin cells "work" like cells at a young age. For this purpose, repeat courses of 3-4 procedures every 6 or 12 months are recommended. The more often repeat courses are carried out, the more slowly the skin will age.

Can the procedures be done in summer?

Yes, photorejuvenation procedures can be performed in the summer period. In California, the birthplace of BBL, the sun is active year-round, yet procedures are carried out year-round without restriction. During the consultation, the doctor will explain how to care for the skin in the summer period.

Is it dangerous to do procedures after dermal fillers?

For Sciton BBL, unlike other photorejuvenation systems, clinical studies were conducted (John Hoopman and co-authors) on combining BBL procedures with fillers. According to the clinical studies conducted, BBL photorejuvenation does not interact with fillers. Botulinum therapy also has no contraindications to BBL.

How is Sciton BBL different from other systems?

The short answer - in the clinical results. A detailed comparison of BBL and IPL technologies shows the significant advantages of the Sciton system:

  1. Sciton BBL photorejuvenation procedures are much more effective than other rejuvenation methods
  2. Sciton BBL is the only method with a proven anti-aging effect
  3. Lower risks of complications thanks to lower power settings

How long has IPL rejuvenation been in use?

The short answer - more than 24 years. IPL received its first FDA approval in 1995 for the treatment of telangiectasia (dilated vessels).

What are photosensitizers?

Photosensitizers - substances that cause increased skin sensitivity to radiation in the visible and infrared range.

Photosensitizers can be pharmaceutical drugs: tetracycline, fluoroquinolones, aspirin, systemic antifungal drugs.

Plant photosensitizers: citrus fruits, St. John's wort, millet, buckwheat.

During photorejuvenation procedures it is recommended to stop taking photosensitizers.

Do you have BBL rejuvenation done on yourselves?

The short answer - it is one of our very favorite procedures!

We are fans of this procedure and gladly have it done on ourselves. All staff, from the administrator to the doctor and management, have BBL rejuvenation. We have been doing photorejuvenation for 19 years, starting in 2006, long before Venus Clinic opened. We can proudly say that we have patients who have been doing photorejuvenation for more than 10 years! This is the best proof of effectiveness and better than any praise. BBL photorejuvenation is one of the most popular procedures at Venus Clinic.
