Laser Removal of Spider Veins on the Face
Spider veins on the nose, cheeks and chin can be removed with a precise laser in 1-3 sessions - no needles, no incisions. At Venus Clinic in Kyiv (Podil, Kontraktova Ploshcha metro) we use the MedArt VariMed laser made in Denmark: the beam targets and closes the dilated vessel while the healthy skin around it stays intact. The spider vein fades or disappears right during the session.
A spider vein (spider angioma) is a dilated superficial blood vessel with a bright red central point and thin capillaries radiating from it like a spider's legs. Tiny dilated capillaries without a distinct center that form a fine network on the sides of the nose and cheeks are called telangiectasias. Both are benign, but neither goes away on its own.
This page covers the removal of spider veins and thread veins on the face, including the nose. For all types of vascular lesions and other body areas, see laser vein removal in Kyiv.
What facial spider veins look like
A spider vein is easy to recognize: in the center there is a red dot the size of a pinhead, with thin winding vessels up to a few millimeters wide branching out from it. If you press on the center with a clear glass, the spot blanches for a second and then refills with blood. Thread veins look different - they are separate red or purple lines with no common center.
Vessels most often dilate where the skin is thin and constantly exposed to temperature changes:
- the sides of the nose and the skin around the nostrils
- the bridge and tip of the nose
- cheeks and cheekbones
- chin
- under the eyes and on the temples
Why spider veins appear
The capillary wall loses its elasticity and stops contracting in response to stress - the vessel stays dilated and becomes visible through the skin. The main triggers are:
- UV exposure and regular time in the sun without protection
- frost, wind, temperature changes, working in hot environments
- hormonal changes - pregnancy, hormonal contraceptives
- genetic predisposition and thin, fair skin
- smoking and alcohol
- harsh skincare: rough scrubs, steaming, aggressive facial cleansing
If there are many vessels combined with persistent redness, it may be couperose - read more about its causes and prevention in couperose: causes, treatment and prevention.
If many spider veins appear within a short time - on the face, neck or upper chest - it is worth seeing a general practitioner. Multiple spider veins can be associated with liver disease and hormonal disorders. During the consultation at the clinic, a dermatologist will assess the lesions and, if needed, recommend further tests.
Indications
- spider veins on the nose, cheeks and chin
- thread veins on the sides of the nose (telangiectasias)
- single dilated capillaries on the face
- telangiectasias associated with couperose and rosacea
- vessels remaining after other procedures or skin injuries
Contraindications
- pregnancy
- breastfeeding
- taking photosensitizing medications
- a fresh tan, including self-tanner
- inflammation or damaged skin in the treatment area
- serious general medical conditions
How the laser removes spider veins
The laser energy is absorbed by hemoglobin in the blood inside the vessel. The vessel wall heats up, the vessel contracts and seals - blood stops flowing through it. Over the following weeks, the remains of the vessel are cleared by the immune system. The skin above the vessel is not cut or punctured.
For a spider vein, the central point that feeds the branches is treated first, then the capillaries radiating from it. That is why one small spider vein usually takes about 10 minutes to remove.
MedArt VariMed laser - why it suits the face
At Venus Clinic, facial vessels are removed with the MedArt VariMed laser (Denmark). Its 808 nm wavelength is well absorbed by blood, so the device is equally effective on red and bluish vessels.
- Removes vessels 0.2-3 mm in diameter - from fine thread veins to large spider veins
- Works across the entire face, including the nose and the sides of the nose
- A built-in cooling system protects the upper layer of the skin before, during and after each pulse
- Handpieces with different beam diameters allow precise targeting of tiny vessels on the complex contours of the nose
Benefits of the procedure
- High precision - the beam acts only on the dilated vessel
- Minimal risks - the skin is not damaged and no scars remain
- Results are visible right after the session
- A short procedure - about 10 minutes per spider vein
- No downtime - mild redness resolves within 1-3 days
- Over 10 years of experience in vein removal at the clinic
Spider veins or redness: laser or BBL?
The VariMed laser is the method of choice when individual vessels are visible: a spider vein, thread veins on the sides of the nose, single capillaries on the cheeks. If the cheeks and nose are covered with diffuse redness without distinct vessels, there is nothing to target point by point - in this case BBL photorejuvenation is more effective, as it treats a large area in one session. The two methods are often combined: BBL clears the background redness, while the laser removes the remaining larger vessels. The doctor determines the approach at the consultation.

How the procedure works
- Consultation. A dermatologist examines the skin, determines the type and depth of the vessels and rules out contraindications.
- Skin preparation. The skin is cleansed and the eyes are protected with special goggles.
- Laser treatment. The doctor passes the beam along each vessel while the cooling works simultaneously with every pulse. It feels like short, warm tingles.
- Completion. A soothing product and sunscreen are applied to the treated area.
What happens to the skin after the procedure
Right after the session, the vessel fades or becomes invisible. For a few hours, mild redness and slight swelling may persist in the treated area - on the nose and cheeks they usually resolve within 1-3 days. Occasionally a barely visible thin crust forms over a larger vessel and falls off on its own - do not pick it.
The final result is assessed after 10-14 days. If some vessels are still visible by then, a repeat session is performed - 1-3 sessions are usually enough.
Preparing for the procedure
- avoid sunbathing and tanning beds for a month, do not use self-tanner
- stop using retinol on the face one month before
- avoid photosensitizing medications (antibiotics, antifungals, fluoroquinolones, aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, vitamin A) - discuss any medication with your doctor
- avoid blood-thinning medications
- no alcohol on the day of the procedure, refrain from smoking
- come without makeup or be ready to remove it at the clinic
Facial skin care after the procedure
- for 3 days:
- no sauna or steam bath, do not steam the face
- no sports or workouts
- no alcohol, refrain from smoking
- do not rub the treated area, no scrubs or peels
- no sunbathing for 1-3 months
- apply Epicalm Plus and Melicor SPF 30+ or SPF 50 sunscreen for 1-3 months after the procedure
The best time to remove facial vessels is autumn and winter: the sun is less intense, the risk of pigmentation after the procedure is lower, and your skin is already clear by summer.

Frequently asked questions
Can spider veins on the nose be removed?
Yes. The MedArt VariMed laser works across the entire face, including the sides, bridge and tip of the nose. Handpieces with a small beam diameter allow precise treatment of tiny vessels on the complex contours of the nose.
Does laser spider vein removal hurt?
The procedure feels like short, warm tingles. The built-in VariMed cooling system works simultaneously with each pulse and reduces discomfort. Most patients tolerate the procedure well.
How many sessions does it take to remove a spider vein?
A small spider vein often disappears after one session. Thread veins and larger vessels usually require 1 to 3 sessions, depending on the diameter and depth of the vessels.
When will I see the result?
The vessel fades or disappears right during the procedure. The final result on the face is assessed no earlier than 10-14 days later, once the remains of the vessel have been fully cleared.
Will there be any marks on the face after the procedure?
Mild redness and swelling usually resolve within 1-3 days. Occasionally a thin crust forms over a larger vessel and falls off on its own. The laser does not leave scars. To avoid pigmentation, it is important not to tan and to use sunscreen.
Can a spider vein come back?
A removed vessel does not recover. However, if the triggers remain - sun, temperature changes, smoking, hormonal changes - new spider veins may appear elsewhere over time. The doctor will give you recommendations on skin care and protection.
Can facial vessels be removed in summer?
Yes, if the skin is not tanned and you are ready to use SPF 30-50 sunscreen every day. However, the optimal time is autumn and winter, when the sun is less intense and the risk of pigmentation is lower.
How much does spider vein removal cost?
Removing one spider vein costs 690 UAH, each additional one costs 250 UAH. Removal of single vessels and thread veins costs 850 UAH per 1 cm². The doctor will confirm the exact cost after the examination.
