In short: BBL stands for BroadBand Light, a patented photorejuvenation technology from the American company Sciton. It should not be confused with the Brazilian Butt Lift surgery or with ordinary IPL devices: BBL is specifically Sciton's technology - more powerful and with more precise control, not just any pulsed light.

What does BBL mean?
BBL™ stands for BroadBand Light, which means using a wide range of radiation from the visible spectrum to infrared, with different pulse durations for phototherapy.
A wider radiation range and higher power make it possible to act on targets in the skin more effectively and comprehensively, delivering clear clinical results.

Difference from IPL
In the name itself, Sciton defined the fundamental difference between BBL and IPL systems from other manufacturers. Thanks to its power, the BBL system acts on the target with strong, solid pulses, without breaking them into short pulses or sub-pulses as IPL systems do. You can feel it during the procedure: a BBL flash feels like a powerful, warm push against the skin, while an IPL flash feels like a portion of heat.
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light.
BBL is a certified medical device backed by a number of clinical studies proving its efficacy and safety for various skin conditions.
Difference between BBL and IPL
BBL photorejuvenation is the most effective solution for removing pigmentation, pathologically dilated vessels (cherry angiomas, telangiectasia, couperose, rosacea), treating acne and preventing photo- and chrono-aging.

Types of skin aging
- Chrono-aging is a process driven by time and linked to age-related changes in the body, which also affect the quality, elasticity and firmness of the skin.
- Photoaging is a process linked to the effect of ultraviolet radiation on the skin, leading to thickening and coarsening of the stratum corneum, dryness, hyperpigmentation, rosacea, wine-coloured spots and an increased vascular pattern (telangiectasia - persistent dilation of small vessels), along with general signs of aging and sun damage.
How it works
Photorejuvenation is a light-based procedure that treats the signs of skin photoaging using the visible and infrared spectrum.
Light energy is absorbed by the skin's chromophores and converted into heat.

During the procedure, the light energy affects the chromophores - the cells that absorb it and, under the influence of heat, are destroyed or change their structure. Immune cells then remove the damaged cells and replace them with young, healthy ones. This is how the therapeutic effect is achieved, depending on the goal: lightening pigmentation, clearing vessels, reducing inflammation in acne and rejuvenating the skin. That is why, during recovery after pigmentation treatment, the treated areas first darken and then gradually exfoliate, leaving the skin brighter, smoother and younger-looking.
Chromophores can be melanin in the skin or hair bulb, haemoglobin in dilated vessels, propionibacteria in acne treatment, and water and fibrous structures (collagen and elastin) when the goal is skin rejuvenation.

Vessels on the neck and décolleté. Poikiloderma
The skin of the neck and décolleté is thinner than facial skin and suffers most from the sun. Over the years a characteristic combination appears here: dilated vessels and redness together with uneven brownish pigmentation. This mixed condition is known as poikiloderma of Civatte.
The difficulty of this zone is that the vascular and pigment components are present at the same time, so methods that address only one of them give a partial result. BBL photorejuvenation acts on both targets at once - haemoglobin in dilated vessels and melanin in pigment spots - in a single session, which is why BBL is well suited to poikiloderma of the neck and décolleté. A course of treatments is usually needed; the exact number is determined by the doctor after skin diagnostics. Single prominent vessels on the neck and face are treated pointwise - with laser vascular removal.
The Forever Young BBL procedure: how does it work?
The essence of the Forever Young BBL procedure lies in its very name - "forever young"! This effect is confirmed by numerous studies proving that Forever Young BBL treatment changes the expression of the genes responsible for our skin's aging. Sciton BBL™ technology delivers functional changes in the skin's structures, not just a cosmetic effect!
- Research from Stanford University shows that BBL (BroadBand Light) phototherapy promotes skin rejuvenation at the genetic level.
- Forever Young BBL™ is the only technology that changes the expression of genes associated with aging, longevity and increased cell lifespan. With regular Forever Young BBL treatments, your skin looks clearer, more radiant and younger.
Forever Young BBL™ slows down skin chrono-aging.

How the technology has evolved: BBL HERO and HEROic
BBL technology keeps evolving. Here are the key milestones worth knowing:
- 2004 - the first BBL (BroadBand Light) system by Sciton is introduced.
- 2020 - BBL HERO (High Energy Rapid Output): up to 4x the speed, 3x the peak power and 2x the cooling compared with the classic BBL. This makes it possible to treat large body areas quickly and comfortably - the back, arms, legs and décolleté - and to work on photoaging of the body's skin, not just the face.
- 2024 - BBL HEROic (HERO with intelligent control): the first "smart" broadband light system. With Intelligent Control technology and the Skin Positioning System, the device tracks the skin's position and distributes the flashes evenly, eliminating striping and pulse stacking - so the result becomes more predictable and comfortable.
All BBL generations run on the Sciton JOULE, BBLs and mJOULE platforms and are genuine Sciton technology, not IPL analogues from other manufacturers.
The body can be treated with photorejuvenation!
Any area can be treated with photorejuvenation. The BBL photorejuvenation procedure is suitable for all areas of the body, including the face, neck and décolleté, arms, shoulders, forearms, back and the backs of the hands - precisely the areas most exposed to ultraviolet light and most likely to show signs of photoaging.

BBL photorejuvenation helps remove not only age spots, freckles and redness on the body, but also greatly improves the quality and condition of your skin, boosting its immunity and normalising the skin's metabolic processes. After a course of treatments, your skin looks firm, toned and fresh - brighter, smoother and younger. Results do not take long: you will see the first changes about two weeks after the first session, and they build with each subsequent treatment.
Photorejuvenation stimulates skin cells to regenerate, lifts the face and neck and reverses the signs of aging, returning your skin to its naturally youthful, radiant state.
What is the course of BBL treatments?
Remember that hardware procedures are always done as a course to achieve the maximum, lasting result. The required number of sessions is chosen individually; the average course is 3-4 procedures, but in some cases it can be increased up to 8, with intervals of 2-3 weeks between them for the face and 3-4 weeks for other areas. To get an accurate idea of the course and an individual treatment plan, book a consultation, where the doctor will explain all the details of the procedure, preparation and post-procedure care, and recommend home skincare products. Home care is essential for the best results.
Consultation and skin diagnostics before the procedure
During the consultation, we always carry out a comprehensive skin diagnostics on a diagnostic system. This gives us a fuller picture of the skin's condition, lets us draw up the most suitable treatment plan and track the positive changes with each subsequent procedure.

Versatility
Thanks to the versatility of BBL, we can confidently say that photorejuvenation suits almost everyone - some for acne treatment, some to fight the signs of photo- and chrono-aging or to remove dilated vessels, and some to prevent premature skin aging. BBL is a unique procedure with a truly pronounced effect and no lengthy downtime, and its results leave no one indifferent!
Combining BBL with injection treatments
The photorejuvenation procedure is effective not only as a standalone treatment - it combines well with all types of injection and hardware procedures, including mesotherapy and biorevitalisation, botulinum therapy, laser skin resurfacing and RF lifting. You can read more about combining mesotherapy and photorejuvenation here: Photorejuvenation and mesotherapy - how to combine them?
Safety and comfort
Effectiveness and versatility are not the only advantages of BBL photorejuvenation - safety and comfort are two more important factors that explain why photorejuvenation has been so popular and in demand for more than a decade.

Thanks to interchangeable adapters of various diameters and shapes, we easily treat all skin areas and can target the necessary spots precisely, even in delicate zones such as the sides of the nose and around the eyes.
The modern, powerful Sciton BBL system lets us perform the procedure not only effectively but also quickly. You can have it during a lunch break and return to your usual activities right away. No long downtime or strict restrictions are needed afterwards. You will receive clear post-procedure skincare recommendations from the doctor, and by following them you will reach the result you want!
Skin care after the procedure
During a course of photorejuvenation, it is important to use the EpiCalm Plus post-laser repair product together with a broad-spectrum sunscreen protecting against UVA/UVB radiation with an SPF of 30 to 50, following skincare standards to achieve maximum results and preserve the health, beauty and youth of your skin for years to come.
Sciton BBL is the only system in the world with proven efficacy confirmed by clinical studies.

Frequently asked questions
How long has BBL been in use?
BBL went on sale in 2004. Over the years the system has undergone many improvements thanks to close cooperation between development engineers and practising doctors.
What is the BBL procedure?
The BBL procedure is a form of phototherapy that can target skin conditions such as acne, pigment spots on the face and body, dilated vessels and skin laxity.
How does BBL differ from IPL, and is every IPL a BBL?
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a general name for pulsed-light technologies. BBL (BroadBand Light) is a specific, patented technology from Sciton. It acts on the target with strong, solid pulses, has a wider radiation range and more precise control of power and cooling, so it works more powerfully than classic IPL. So not every IPL is a BBL: BBL is specifically Sciton's technology, not just any pulsed-light device.
How can you tell a genuine Sciton BBL from a "BBL-like" device?
Ask which device is used and who makes it. Genuine BroadBand Light is a technology from Sciton (USA) on the JOULE, BBLs or mJOULE platforms. If a treatment is called "BBL" but the device is from another manufacturer, it is an IPL analogue, not the original BBL. Venus Clinic uses the original Sciton BBL on the Joule platform.
Why is the result on a "BBL-like" device less predictable?
IPL analogues often have lower peak power and weaker control of energy distribution and cooling. This makes it harder to hit the target consistently and to avoid uneven heating, so results vary more from session to session. The original Sciton BBL has precise power control, cooling accurate to within a degree and clinical efficacy studies - which makes the result more predictable.
Doesn't the result depend mostly on the doctor rather than the device?
Both factors matter. Even the best device will not deliver results without a sound protocol, skin diagnostics and an experienced doctor. At the same time, the doctor is limited by the device: with a certified Sciton BBL and precise power control it is easier to achieve a predictable, safe result than with a low-power analogue. That is why we combine genuine Sciton technology with an individual approach from the doctor.
How much does a genuine BBL cost?
The cost of BBL photorejuvenation depends on the treatment area and the number of sessions in the course. A genuine Sciton BBL usually costs more than "BBL-like" IPL devices, because it is a certified technology with clinically proven efficacy and a more predictable result. The exact price for your case is calculated at the consultation - see current prices on the BBL photorejuvenation page.
Does BBL remove vessels and pigmentation on the neck and décolleté (poikiloderma)?
Yes. Poikiloderma of Civatte is a combination of dilated vessels, redness and uneven pigmentation on the neck and décolleté caused by chronic sun exposure. BBL acts on the vascular and pigment components at the same time, so it is well suited to this area. A course of treatments is needed, and the number is determined by the doctor after skin diagnostics.
