BBL or IPL: What Is the Difference and Why They Are Not the Same

"Is BBL the same thing as IPL?" is one of the most common questions we hear at a consultation. The short answer is no. IPL is an entire category of intense pulsed light devices made by different manufacturers, while BBL (BroadBand Light) is a specific patented technology developed by Sciton. A shared physical principle does not make the devices equivalent: they differ in pulse stability, available protocols and the evidence behind them.

Below is a breakdown without the marketing: how broadband light works, what the difference actually looks like from the patient's chair, and how to verify which device is being used for your treatment.

IPL and BBL - what the abbreviations stand for

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It is a general name for a whole class of devices from different manufacturers.

BBL stands for BroadBand Light. It is a patented technology and the registered trademark BBL™ of Sciton, introduced in 2004.

BBL and IPL are not synonyms

The relationship between the two terms is this: every BBL device works on the broadband light principle, but not every broadband light device is a BBL. Phrases such as "we use BBL technology" or "a treatment based on the BBL principle" usually mean that a different device is being used, not the original Sciton system.

BBL and IPL. How does it work?

Broadband light technologies

Both systems (IPL and BBL) work on the principle of selective photothermolysis, delivering light energy into the skin. That energy is absorbed by chromophores in the skin and converted into heat. Chromophores, also called targets, include pigment in the skin or the hair follicle, haemoglobin in pathologically dilated vessels and haemangiomas, coproporphyrins produced by Cutibacterium acnes when acne is the target, and the water contained in the skin and the intercellular space.

The heat that accumulates in the chromophore under light exposure destroys it, after which immune cells clear away the dead cells.

This is how the clinical result is achieved: depending on the goal of the treatment, skin tone evens out, vascular lesions clear, inflammation in acne goes into remission, and so on.

Over the past decade, treatment with BBL systems has become a widespread and reliable way to correct skin photodamage, treat couperose and rosacea, and prevent age-related changes.

What the patient actually notices

The difference is most visible on vessels. Patients are often surprised that vascular lesions visibly clear after the very first BBL treatment - especially those who previously completed a full course of 8 to 10 IPL "vessel removal" sessions and had grown used to slow, barely noticeable progress.

The explanation is technical rather than promotional. The rectangular pulse shape, controlled power distribution across the crystal area and precise skin cooling together make it possible to work at energies sufficient to coagulate a vessel in a single pass. On a device with an unstable pulse and no cooling, those energies are unsafe, so the treatment is deliberately made gentler and the shortfall is compensated by the number of sessions. Three arguments often used in favour of IPL devices

"Our device is more powerful, so it is better"

What matters is not the peak figure in the specification but how the energy is distributed within the flash. Uneven power distribution is a typical weakness of IPL, not an advantage: part of the light spot receives more energy and part receives less. The result is an undertreated area and a risk of burns elsewhere at the very same settings. Comparative testing protocols cited as proof of "greater power" usually leave this point out.

"One wavelength covers every indication"

Treating pigmentation, vessels and acne with a single 515 nm wavelength is a simplification the patient pays for. Different targets have different absorption spectra: the haemoglobin of a vessel and the melanin of a pigmented spot call for different filters. A 580 nm wavelength does formally exist on IPL devices, but at working power levels it is effectively not used. This is precisely why BBL provides a set of interchangeable filters that are swapped to match the task within a single treatment.

"Our pulse is shorter"

A short pulse is not an advantage in itself. Without synchronised skin cooling it means high energy density at the surface, which raises the risk of burns and therefore forces working parameters to be lowered, limiting what the method can achieve. The before and after photographs offered alongside this claim do not confirm the advantage.

Levels of evidence: studies, not observations

Device advertising often claims "we have more clinical research". The level of evidence is what matters here: clinical observations and case series sit at the lower end of the evidence hierarchy, while peer-reviewed studies with a controlled design and blinded assessment sit at the top. BBL technology rests on the second category.

The Stanford University study

The study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology (Chang A, Bitter P Jr, et al., 2013;133(2):394-402, doi: 10.1038/jid.2012.287) showed that the Sciton BroadBand Light treatment can shift the expression of ageing-related genes towards the pattern seen in young skin. It confirms that regulators of ageing can be altered in human skin using BBL technology, which means functional change rather than a cosmetic imitation of youth. At the same time, the repair-through-injury mechanisms typical of most rejuvenation procedures are not triggered: without that stress response the skin's resources are not depleted and no tolerance to the treatment develops. Retrospective evaluation of the long-term effect

The second key study (Bitter P Jr, Pozner J, Cutis 2013;91(2):34-40) assessed the long-term outcome: 15 patients aged 38 to 69 received at least one Forever Young BBL treatment per year over a period of 5 to 11 years, and their before and after images were assessed blind by 491 independent evaluators. The conclusion was that regular treatments slow the appearance of visible signs of ageing. Our review of this study is in the article nine years younger than their age.

One point is fundamental: both studies concern Sciton technology, not "similar" devices. Their conclusions cannot be transferred to analogues automatically, even when the treatment is marketed as BBL-like. Proprietary protocols such as Forever Young BBL are built on this evidence.

How to verify that your treatment uses a genuine BBL

A few simple questions before the treatment remove most of the doubt:

  • Ask for the manufacturer and the model. The answer should be specific: Sciton, a platform with a BBL or BBL HERO module. "Premium professional IPL" is not the name of a device.
  • Ask to see the device. Original equipment carries Sciton branding on the housing.
  • Pay attention to the wording in advertising. "BBL technology", "photorejuvenation on the BBL principle" and "BBL-like treatment" in practice usually mean a different device. The original is not labelled that way - it has a specific name, BBL™ by Sciton.
